The question behind this article

The US market is so diverse. When I run Meta ads, how do I target and market to audiences from different cultural backgrounds?

Short answerIn Meta Advantage+, manual interest targeting matters less and your creative has become the strongest targeting signal. Write three to five US audience hypotheses and give each its own creatives with different opening hooks. Keep audiences broad and budgets concentrated, make sure your Pixel and Conversions API send accurate data, then break results out by creative to see who the algorithm actually found, and scale the winners.

Key takeaways

  • In automated campaigns like Advantage+, creative is the most important signal telling the algorithm who to find, while manual interest targeting matters less and less.
  • According to Social Media Today, Meta's Advantage+ feature that turns static images into video is now generally available, and its AI business assistant can generate creative, update targeting and adjust budgets through conversation.
  • Advertising abroad involves two information gaps: the platform understands the data better than the seller, and the seller often understands US consumers too little. The second gap is the one sellers can close.
  • Make several creatives for each of three to five US audience hypotheses, then review results by creative to see who the algorithm actually reached.
  • As purchase paths get shorter, your ad, landing page and customer service must make the same promises to turn clicks into orders that don't come back as returns.

How do you target US audiences from different cultural backgrounds? The short answer: in automated campaigns like Meta Advantage+, hand-picking interest targets matters less and less. What decides who sees your ad is increasingly the creative itself. So first get clear on who will buy and why, build that answer into your creative, and let the algorithm follow the creative to find people.

Advertising Week earlier this month made the trend even clearer. According to Social Media Today, Meta announced that the Advantage+ feature that turns static images into video is now generally available, that its AI business assistant can generate creative, update targeting and adjust budgets through conversation, and that it is testing direct checkout inside Meta AI with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe. The same week, Social Media Today also covered TikTok's updates: an AI shopping assistant for in-app search, one-click Buy Direct checkout from the For You feed, and the US launch of the TikTok Ad Network.

What did Meta and TikTok just change?

  • More automated creative: Advantage+ image-to-video is generally available, and Ads Creative Studio is opening to more advertisers for generating and editing video creative.
  • Campaign work handed to chat: Meta's AI business assistant draws on your past campaigns, seasonality and goals, and Meta is testing scheduled tasks such as recurring performance reports and alerts.
  • Audience controls still exist: Meta's Customer Lifecycle Strategy is now open to all advertisers and lets you assign an audience to each campaign.
  • Shorter paths to purchase: Meta is pushing direct checkout in Messenger and Meta AI, and TikTok's Buy Direct allows one-click ordering from the For You feed.
  • More placements and automation: the TikTok Ad Network has arrived in the US, covering nearly 400,000 third-party and developer apps worldwide, and TikTok's Smart+ now extends to search ad automation.

Put together, the platforms are taking over more and more decisions, from creative to targeting to budget. Advertisers control fewer variables directly, and creative has become the most important input.

Why does targeting get harder to read as ads get more automated?

Economists call this information asymmetry: when one side of a deal knows far more than the other, the side with less information struggles to make good decisions.

Advertising abroad has two layers of it. The first sits between the platform and the seller. The platform sees every user's behavior while you only see the results report, so it's hard to know why Advantage+ showed your ad to a particular group. The second sits between the seller and US consumers. Teams back home in China often don't know Americans' daily routines, how they talk or what makes them hesitate to buy, so they end up guessing.

You'll never catch up on the first layer; the platform will always have more data than you. But you can close the second, and you have to. The better you understand your customers, the sharper the signals your creative sends, and the easier it is for the algorithm to find the right people.

What does "creative is the new targeting" actually mean?

In automated campaigns with broad audiences, the system watches who views, who clicks and who buys, then looks for more people like them. If a creative opens with a particular person's problem, the system tends to show it to people who have that problem. In other words, whoever you write for is whoever the algorithm helps you find.

Imagine you sell a portable blender cup in the US. You could build completely different creatives for different audiences:

Audience hypothesisWhat they care aboutOpen the creative withWhat the landing page needs
CommutersRushed mornings, but they want to eat healthy"Breakfast in 60 seconds, before you leave the driveway"Capacity, cleanup time, whether it fits a car cup holder
Gym-goersClumpy protein shakes; refueling on the go is a hassle"No more clumpy protein shakes at the gym"Battery life, blending power, side-by-side tests
College studentsSmall dorm rooms, tight budgets"The only blender that fits on a dorm desk"Price, size in inches, noise level
New parentsMaking baby food, material safety"Fresh baby food without dragging out the big blender"Material details, how to clean it, returns promise

One product, four audiences, four openings. Once the ads run, whichever creative gets better clicks and sales tells you which group the system found for you, and where to double down with the next batch.

How do you build a creative-driven Advantage+ campaign?

  1. Write three to five audience hypotheses. Go beyond age and gender: spell out the situation, motivation and worries, such as "night runners in apartments who worry about bothering the neighbors."
  2. Make three creatives per audience. Give each a different opening hook. If all you have is product photos, use Advantage+ image-to-video to create video versions first, then check by hand that the visuals are accurate.
  3. Go broad on audience, narrow on budget. Limit location to the US and keep everything else as broad as you can. Concentrate budget in a few campaigns instead of splitting it across many small ad sets, so the system gets enough conversion data.
  4. Send conversion signals back. Check that the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API are correctly reporting add-to-cart and purchase events. If the signals are off, even the smartest algorithm will find the wrong people.
  5. Review by creative, not by audience. After about a week, break each creative's results down by age, gender and region in Ads Manager to see who the system actually reached.
  6. Scale the winners, replace the tired ads. Keep adding fresh hooks for the audience angles that perform, and swap out creatives whose click-through rate keeps sliding.
  7. Split only when you need to manage separately. If different campaigns really must target different audiences, use Customer Lifecycle Strategy, now open to all advertisers, to assign an audience to each campaign.

What cultural mistakes do Chinese sellers make most often with US audiences?

  • Literal translation: the grammar is fine, but it doesn't sound like an American talking, and shoppers can tell at a glance it's a foreign seller.
  • The wrong setting: models, home interiors and the food on the table all signal "this isn't from my world," and the ad loses its pull.
  • Units and sizes: Americans use inches, pounds and Fahrenheit, and a size chart in centimeters only will turn a lot of people away.
  • Mismatched holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday and the Christmas season run on a different rhythm from China's big shopping festivals, so prepare creative at least a month ahead.
  • Inconsistent promises: as purchase paths get shorter, what the ad says, what the landing page states and what customer service answers must match, or returns and bad reviews will follow fast.
  • Treating the US as one market: needs vary widely by region, age and ethnicity, so write creative separately for at least a few core audiences.

Once the algorithm makes the calls, what's left for you?

Three things no algorithm can replace: understanding your customers, supplying good creative and protecting your profit floor. The rest of the execution, including budget adjustments and creative-fatigue calls, can go to the system and your tools.

ToucHigh's Ads feature automatically adjusts campaigns toward ROAS (return on ad spend) across Amazon, Meta and Google and makes creative-fatigue and budget-allocation calls for you, so you can put your energy into understanding US customers better. How ToucHigh helps

In automated advertising, you win on creative and judgment. ToucHigh can help you:

  • Run Amazon, Meta and Google ads from one place with Ads, with budgets adjusted automatically toward ROAS (return on ad spend).
  • Watch for creative fatigue continuously and make the call on swapping creatives and shifting budget, so good ads don't get run into the ground.
  • Pair it with Social Media Manager Autopilot to produce posts and creatives in natural US English for different audiences, each with a predicted-engagement score before it's scheduled, as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Try starting with one hero product and three audience angles, and see which US customers get found first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to set interest targeting with Advantage+?

You can, but treat it as a suggestion, not a limit. With Advantage+ audience, the system uses the audience details you provide as a reference and may expand to more people. For small sellers, it usually works better to keep audiences broad, spend your effort on different creatives for different groups, and make sure your conversion data comes back accurately.

Is Advantage+ a good fit for a small ad budget?

Yes, as long as you concentrate it. With a small budget, don't split it into many ad sets, or none of them will get enough conversion data for the system to learn. Put one hero product into a few campaigns with six to nine creatives covering different audiences, review once a week, and cut the worst performers.

When does Advantage+ image-to-video make sense?

It suits sellers who only have product photos and can't shoot video yet but want to test video placements quickly. According to Social Media Today, the feature is now generally available. Use it to create video versions in bulk, check product appearance, text and proportions by hand, and invest in real filming only for the directions that perform.

What does the TikTok Ad Network's US launch mean for sellers?

It means TikTok ads can now reach more placements outside the TikTok app. According to Social Media Today, the network covers nearly 400,000 third-party and developer apps worldwide. People in those apps are in a different mindset than on TikTok itself, so test these placements separately and track their conversions on their own instead of mixing them with in-app results.
